Payroll trust and responsibility – The Payroll Podcast with Nick Day
Payroll Trust and Responsibility: More Than Just Processing Payslips
Recently, I had the privilege of joining The Payroll Podcast to talk about something that sits at the heart of everything we do at Augustus Payroll Services:Â payroll trust and responsibility.

The discussion covered my journey into payroll, building a business through personal crisis, acquiring 85 clients in two weeks, and why I believe payroll is one of the most undervalued yet vital functions in any organisation.
But if I had to summarise the entire conversation in one phrase, it would be this:
Payroll is about trust.
Payroll Is Not About Process. It Is About People.
When asked what payroll means to me, my answer was immediate.
Payroll is not about systems.
It is not about HMRC.
It is not about pressing buttons.
It is about the person at the end of the payslip.
That individual is relying on us to pay their mortgage. Feed their children. Manage their commitments. That is why payroll trust and responsibility matter so deeply. If something goes wrong, we should feel that weight.
I have lost sleep over payroll in the past. Most of us in this profession have. That is not weakness. That is care.
And care builds trust.
From “You Won’t Amount to Much” to Running a Payroll Business
I spoke openly on the podcast about being heavily asthmatic as a child and being diagnosed with dyslexia. I was told I would not amount to much. I struggled academically and had to find different ways to learn.
Looking back, dyslexia did not hold me back. It shaped my resilience.
Resilience became the foundation of my business.
When my daughter experienced a severe mental health crisis in 2023, my priorities shifted overnight. Family came first. I stepped away from employment and began networking during the small windows of time I had available.
Augustus Payroll Services was not born from a perfect business plan. It grew from necessity, flexibility, and determination.
And from there, it grew quickly.
85 Clients in Two Weeks
In June 2024, we completed a business acquisition that required onboarding 85 clients within two weeks.
There was no long runway. No extended preparation period.
We worked as a family. Long hours. No shortcuts. Personal phone calls to clients. Transparent conversations. Reassurance that their payroll would stay in the UK and be handled by experienced professionals.
We retained 100 percent of those clients.
Why?
Because payroll trust and responsibility were visible from day one.
Clients do not just buy payroll processing. They buy confidence.
Why Payroll Is Still Undervalued
One of the strongest themes in the conversation was how payroll continues to be treated as a back office function.
Too often, it is bundled in for free. Discounted. Treated as an add on.
But payroll is complex. It is regulated. It carries financial and reputational risk.
It deserves specialist focus.
At Augustus Payroll Services, we are payroll only. That is intentional. We charge properly for expertise because we understand the weight of payroll trust and responsibility.
When payroll is done well, nobody notices.
When payroll goes wrong, everyone feels it.
That is not a cost centre. That is a critical function.
Leading With Empathy
The podcast also touched on something I care deeply about: people.
Many of our team members are neurodivergent or managing mental health challenges. My daughter now works within the business and continues to grow in confidence and capability.
Leadership today is not about control. It is about empathy.
You do not know what someone is carrying behind the scenes. A kind word, flexibility, and genuine listening go further than policy ever will.
Payroll is human. Always.
Advice for Anyone Wanting to Start a Payroll Business
If you are thinking about starting your own payroll bureau, here is my honest advice:
Do not wait until you feel completely ready. You never will.
Be practical. Create a disaster budget. Know the minimum you can live on. Set financial targets.
Then take the step.
Growth does not always come at the “right” time. In fact, the timing may feel entirely wrong. But resilience is often built in the moments you did not plan for.
The Human Side of Payroll
At the end of the podcast, I described payroll as the song Human by Rag’n’Bone Man.
Because behind every email, every payslip, every correction and calculation, there is a person.
And behind every payroll professional, there is a human too.
We are not robots. We care. We carry responsibility.
And that is why payroll trust and responsibility will always remain at the core of what we do.
